US Army 1964-67
In August of 1965 I came home for my last leave. I borrowed Stella's 1965 T-bird convertible that her husband Roy Obenshane had bought for her. |
Fred Mason, Milton Gray and I at the Wolf Creek bridge near Brush Creek. We were drinking Black Lable beer and acting drunk. This was the last frame on the roll of film. I held up the camera and pushed the button. Fred later joined the Navy. Milton, I believe Navy also. Milton won a purple heart in vietnam. Fred was stationed on a spy ship off the coast of the USSR. Fred was shot and killed in Mt. Vernon still in his early 40's. Milton died I believe of natural causes in his late 40's or early 50's. |

Fort Knox 1964 |
I enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of
1964. I did my Basic training and Advanced Individual training
at Fort Knox Kentucky. I was then stationed at Fort George
Meade Maryland. I was first of all a Security Guard for several
months. I was then a clerk in S-2.
When the war in Vietnam started I volunteered. As the papers were being processed I found out I was already on orders for somewhere else. Months past and I volunteered again for Vietnam. I was then told that I was on orders for Commander In Chief Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii. I was told that I had to wait until I got to Hawaii and volunteer again. I spent the remainder of my time in Hawaii. About a year and a half. I was discharged in February of 1967. |
I saw my first protest while stationed in Hawaii. I remember that it seemed to me like it could not be happening.
