THOMAS HART BENTON'S PERSEPHONE
Thomas Hart Benton did this painting called "Persephone".
Thomas Hart Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri in 1889. He
studied at the Corcorran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Chicago Art Institute.
He lived in Paris from 1908 to 1911 and studied at the Academie Julien and the
Academie Collarossi. In 1926 he was appointed to the faculty of the Art Students
League. In 1935 he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and was director of the Department
of Painting of the Kansas City Art Institute from 1935 to 1941. Thomas Hart Benton painted the Social History of the State of Indiana murals at Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana. He painted Persephone, in 1938-39. It is in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City Missouri.
