Earl Watts had been calling Janice, She was the girl that I was going with at that time. He said I was a big slob, or that's what Janice said. Earl had been going with her the summer before.
I called Earl's house and he wasn't home. The next night I called and he was home. I told him what Janice said and told him to keep his mouth shut. He said he didn't say those things and if he had he would not say it behind my back. This was on Thursday evening. Friday at dinner I was talking to a couple of friends of mind Dick and Bob and told them. "I'm gong to call him tonight and arrange a fight Saturday at South Park." A friend of Watts heard me telling Dick and told Watts. He saw me after next class and said "I heard you was gonna fight me."
I said. "Yea. You be behind the park Saturday at 6:00."
He said "No lets fight after school"
I said. "I gotta get home after school."
So he finally agreed to Saturday. I had P.E. next period and we played football. It was a hard game but we won 32 to 6. I went out to catch the bus and have a cigarette. Here came Watts, Mike and someone else. Watts came up to me and said "lets fight now."
I said "I don't want to fight now. We had our time set."
He said "Yea you won't fight because your chicken.'
I said "O.K. lets go."
We went up the hill to a place used for a parking lot. It was right beside the bus stop.
Watts said "You'd better take your shirt off I might get it dirty."
I said "Don't worry It won't get dirty."
I let go with the first punch . It didn't land too good. I think it landed in the gut. I kept my guard up pretty good. Practically all he hit me was in the left arm. The left arm was practically paralyzed. I landed a good one in the gut but he didn't feel it very much. I hit him in the temple, He didn't feel it very much either. Finally I hit him in the jaw and he fell down and caught himself with one hand. I hesitated for a split second, thinking whether to jump him or keep on losing. That's where I made my mistake. I jumped him and got my arm around his body. In a split second decision, I decided to turn him loose and box him . When I loosened my grip he pushed me backwards and I was on the bottom. He put his knees on my arms and had me completely helpless. When he first got me down someone said "You're dead, now" But I don't remember hearing him. He started hitting me in the face. After he had me good and bloody. He said" You give?" I said "Hell no." He hit me a couple more times and said "You give?" I said "no". He hit me a few more times and asked me again. I said "I guess so. He let me up.

Then he said "Now get out of here". Then I said "Just because you beat me don't mean you can boss me." He said "You want me to hit you again' and he put up his fist. I just stood there smiling. He backed up a little and I pulled out my stiletto. He started backing up putting his hands out in front of him saying "Put..Put that away." I can't describe the look on his face . He was really scared. |
George Adamski started moving toward me I acted like I didn't see him but I was watching him out of the corner of my eye. He finally made a grab for it. I jerked it away and pointed it at him. Eddy Lytel keep telling me to put it away. I put it back in my pocked and got on the bus. My face was a bloody mess. blood was running all over my face, shirt, books and down my hands. I was talking about getting Watts later, on the buss.
Tommy Boggs said "I shouldn't use a knife. If I wanted to use something like that I should use a sickle or something." Joe Ditchinger and all the guys from South Park were behind me. They said they heard Watts say he was going to get a bunch of tough guys from Beacon Hill. They said they would all help in a gang fight. Bill said the cops were around South Park asking about any gangs around there. So the gang fight was called off. I saw Earl between 2nd and 3rd period. He said "The principle,' Mr. Imus' saw the fight and has already talked to me" I was in a hot spot so I shook hands with him. Imus called me into his office 6th period. He gave a good bawling out and said "I'm not going to have this knife stuff any more. Give me the knife." I told him "I didn't have it. I left it at home" I had actually given it to Bill to keep for me. He said "bring it to school tomorrow and bring one of your parents." He said. "What's this about making bombs. Bill Lindsay made one and brought it to school. How do you make them?"
I said "Oh" I just put a firecracker in a bottle and that's all there is to it" but really they are a lot more complicated and more powerful.
The next day I brought my brother James to school with me. I told Imus my parents couldn't come because they both worked.
I handed him the knife. He said, "this isn't a stiletto" I said "yes it is" He said "Where's the button?" I said "it doesn't have a button." "Well how does it open?" He asked.
I said, "Here let me show you." getting up, reaching for the knife at the same time. He handed it to me, I opened it with a "click" faster than the eye can follow. We talked awhile and let me go to classes.
