HALLOWEEN NIGHT

It was Halloween night.  There was a carnival at South Park Field House.  I was with Bill and Fred.

The carnival wasn't very good so we went out soaping windows.   Fred and I went down to the service station, which was closed, on Cloverdale.    We were writing our names on the windows when I saw a Fuzz coming up Cloverdale.  I yelled at Fred and we took off down the alley between Cloverdale and Sullivan.  I don't suppose, the cop saw us, anyway he didn't come after us.

There were a few cops at the carnival to watch after things.   There was one of their unmarked cars outside the park gates.

I said "Fred lets soap their windows."  Fred said, "No-ooh, we might get caught."  "No we won't." I said.

I soaped them because he wouldn't.  I'll have to admit though that I was a little bit scared.

Me and the rest of the guys stayed around the park awhile. There was Me, Fred, Bill, Howey, Dave, Butch, Johnny, and some others. Swede and Johnny, came and started to go home.  Susie saw a girl she didn't like and a few more girls she was with walking with up 8th avenue.  Susie said, "Hey you old Bitch."

These girls were on the other side of the street.  They said a few words to each other and crossed over.

Susie said to Johnny, "Oh here they come".   The girl said to Susie. "Have you got something against me."  Susie said. "Yea you're stuck up."  The other girl, who was about 16 and Susie only 14, said "I'm getting tired of your bitching."  I don't remember the other words, but anyway a fight started.

Then this girl hit Susie a good one.  Susie went about halfway down and got back up.  This last one slowed it down quite a bit.  By now they were mostly battling with words.  I was for Susie.  When the last punch was thrown I leaned up against a big oak tree in front of the park.  I then reached into my shoe to get out a solid steel dissecting knife.   But as I got it halfway out of my shoe I saw the cops get out of the car I'd soaped, just as calm as if nothing was happening.

They came over to where the fight was.  The younger of the two cops was smiling.  He broke up the fight and told the girls to go home.  The cops told us boys to go home and said "You older boys are the cause of this."  I don't think the cop ever looked my way.

Dave said, "Jack's the oldest."  I don't know what I was going to do with the knife.  I guess I'll never know.
