I had just mixed up some potassium chlorate and sulfur. Tom and I decided we would go down to the river and try it. The riverbank was lighted up pretty well because Loowings was just across the river and there was a street light about 100 feet away.
We were going to light it down by some old buildings which were once a house but now used to store junk in. There was and old log laying out in the water about 15 foot.
Tom decided this was the best place to light it so he crawled out on the log and spread the powder. There was about 2 oz in all.

I told Tom I would watch for cops. I stood over by the old building and told Tom to light it. Tom said "Wait a minute I want to make a fuse."and started sprinkling out a thin line. |
Just then I saw a red knob come over the hill about 150 feet away and yelled "Cops".
Tom stayed where he was. I got around the corner of the building. We were lucky they hadn't seen nor heard us.
We waited a couple minutes and lit the powder.
I ask Tom what he would have done if the cops had seen us? He said. "I'd have jumped in the river because I'm out on parole." I don't know what I'd have done because we would sure have been cornered.
